As Morrisville pitcher Cory DiMario was taken out of the game in the sixth inning, Morrisville fans who traveled over four hours to the game in Mansfield began to chant "M-V-P, M-V-P." DiMario deserved adulation.
DiMario was dominant as Morrisville defeated Mon-toursville, 10-3, in the 10-11 Baseball state championship game on Thursday night at Leipold Field.
He went 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out three. He frustrated Montoursville hitters all night with his breaking ball.
"He pitched a fantastic game," said Morrisville manager Tony DiMario. "He stayed in the game and we just told him to focus on your pitches and make it through the game."
The pitching was great for Morrisville but the offense was great, too. Morrisville got on the board in the first inning with an RBI single by Will Binder and an RBI groundout by catcher Jordy Sesar. Morrisville added another run on a passed ball.
Morrisville exploded for five runs and five hits in the third inning, including a three-run home run to center field that made it a 6-2 game. A Joseph Martell two-RBI double made it 8-2.
Morrisville added a run in the fourth on a Sammy Spadea RBI single and another in the fifth on a Sweeney RBI single that made it 10-2.
Despite falling behind early, Montoursville fought hard to remain in the game. The District 12 champs scored a run in the second inning on a Cole Ranck RBI single after Morrisville's three-run first. In the third inning, a Mason Sechrist single scored C.J. Signor to bring Montoursville to within 3-2.
"I told the kids when we started this whole tournament six weeks ago, it's a ladder we climb one step at a time and we made it all the way to the top," said Montoursville manager Lee Ranck. "Morrisville made all the plays. We hit the ball hard, but hats off to them. They made all the plays."
"We watched them the last couple of days and we knew they had fight in them," said Morrisville manager Tony DiMario. "Regardless of how many runs we were up, we knew that they still could come back."
Sechrist led the Montoursville offense. He finished 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
