Taking exception

August 9, 2013
Williamsport Sun-Gazette

I take exception to the Sunday July 28 editorial which characterized President Obama's comments in the press room last week as arrogantly stoking the fires of racism. In my view, he spoke thoughtfully on several points: The emotional pain of the black community regarding the Trayvon Martin case; the need to have person-person conversations about race instead of any sort of national commission; concern for young black males; his belief that racial division is improving in younger generations; and his confidence in the future.
