Each season tends to have certain types or styles of music associated with it. "Hot Fun in the Summertime,"?a collaboration between the Uptown Music Collective and the Milissa Augustine Dance Academy, focuses on the summer season - with the music and genres that bring about that "summer feeling."
The performance, which will be held at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 16 and 17, will be split over four sections of music, including surf, rock, island and urban/Latin. Bands and artists to be featured include The Beach Boys, Bob Marley, Katy Perry, The Black Eyed Peas, Paul Simon, War, Jimmy Cliff and Santana.
The flexible and talented students of both schools will perform the music with an eye toward loyal and accurate reproductions of the original bands' distinctive sounds and with the theatrical flair and artful showmanship characteristic of the finest of dance.
This performance will be a true collaboration between the students of each school and will be organized by a student leadership committee involving both music and dance students.
"Hot Fun in the Summertime" will feature more than 100 performers between 12 and 18 years of age from both schools who have been preparing for this performance for more than two months. Along with the live music and dance, there also will be a powerful light and sound show organized by the students themselves. As with all Uptown Music Collective performances, the students are not only the performers, but also direct the show.
"Within a performance season, the Collective traditionally has two major performances at the Community Arts Center," Jared Mondell, UMC's admissions and marketing director, said. "This collaboration with Milissa Augustine and her students will be the first time we will be doing three major performances in a season and everyone involved is pretty excited about it. This show is a great way to cap off our 2012-13 performance season and show the growth of our organization." This performance is organized by a student leadership committee involving students from the both the Uptown Music Collective and Milissa Augustine Dance Academy. The student leadership committee for this show currently includes: Zack Chism, 14, Williamsport Area High School; Janaya Daniele, 17, St. John Neumann Regional Academy; Kira Crissinger, 15, Milton Area High School; Cade Palmatier, 11, Jersey Shore Area Elementary and Shelby Lynch, 17, Montgomery Area High School. Other students on the committee include: Alexandra Lehman, 18, Williams-port Area High School graduate; Amber Fleming, 18, Williamsport Area High School graduate; Alyviah Martin, 15, South Williamsport High School; Mallory McIlwain, 16, Jersey Shore Area High School and Katelyn Neece, 15, Williamsport Area High School. The leadership committee is under the supervision of Uptown Music Collective Executive Director Dave Brumbaugh and choreographer Milissa Augustine.
"I am privileged to have the opportunity to participate in collaboration between the Uptown Music Collective and the Milissa Augustine Dance Academy," Milissa Augustine student Alexandra Lehman, 18, from Penn State Altoona, said. "We are excited to participate in this performance that gives us a chance to experience dancing to live music. It also gives the participants from both schools the experience to understand and appreciate another art form. We hope the audience enjoys 'Hot Fun in the Summer Time' as much as we do!"
"I've performed on the CAC stage for numerous different occasions, but nothing like this," said Brennan Hepler, 16-year-old Loyalsock Township High School and Uptown Music Collective student.
