After reading the two letters about racism, I had to respond. Racism should never be. It is a learned behavior that can go all ways. Our children learn to be bigots from their parents and grandparents.
Racism goes back hundred of years. When the Europeans took black people (mostly children) out of Africa where rival African tribes sold their enemies to the White traders, a practice began that has never stopped. Slave trade has been about all kinds of people for the same amount of time. When the Europeans decided to come to the New World, they brought the slaves with them, bought more, sold to other who came here. It didn't end there.
The owners used the female slaves (and some male ones) as their mistresses, who had their babies and then treated them as slaves, too. Like who would know that those babies of color were children of the slave owners?
When the Civil War was fought to free the slaves, many men and women even came to the call, even though there was a stigma about people of color. The northern men stepped up to the plate and helped to free all people of color and won!
There is still a stigma about people of color in some places today. Up until about 30 years ago, there didn't seem to be that stigma in Williamsport. It was peaceful and quiet here.
People of color from all lands have come to America to experience freedom. They were never bargained for what they face today.
I just wish that all people would start looking at the inside and the goals of every person they meet and not the color of their skin! Have compassion and love for your fellow human being.
It seems that whenever anything happens that concerned people of color and white people. The NAACP, Rev. Sharpton and Jesse Jackson jumps up and scream "Racism!" even when it isn't! Please stop making everything about race!
Having had many friends who are considered persons of color over the years, I wouldn't trade any of them for any prejudiced white person. I'd rather look at who a person is and what they stand for and not the color of their skin.
