Lycoming County United Way, in collaboration with neighboring United Way chapters, is launching Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program in Lycoming County.
The program will provide participating pre-school children with age-appropriate books that are mailed to their homes monthly.
"Through this program, hundreds of youngsters will be introduced to the world of reading, while at the same time strengthening the parent/child relationship," said Scott N. Lowery, Lycoming County United Way executive director.
The program kicks off from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Eastern Lycoming YMCA, where Lycoming County children from 1 to 5 years old can register to receive books free of charge.
As long as they remain a resident of Lycoming County, the books will be sent monthly until the child reaches his fifth birthday.
"Dolly Parton's program is a wonderful opportunity for youngsters to begin a lifetime of reading. Success in school is directly tied to reading skills. Kids all like to have something of their own. The Imagination Library provides both by giving them a new book each month and wetting their appetite to read," Lowery said.
Individuals, organizations or businesses may sponsor a child by contacting the Lycoming County United Way at 323-9448 or by email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
"Sponsorships of this program are a great way to give a very special gift to a child who will get a year's worth of enjoyment and education at the same time," Lowery said.
