Kelly B. Butzler, associate professor of chemistry at Pennsylvania College of Technology, was invited to present a session at the Middle Atlantic Discovery Chemistry Project's 2013 meeting.
Butzler was co-presenter with Lolita A. Paff, assistant professor of business economics at Penn State Berks, for a session titled "Flip Your Class! Strategies and Student Reactions to a Flipped Classroom."
A "flipped classroom" moves lectures online, outside of class and moves assignments into the classroom, where teachers can provide guidance and answer questions.
The 2013 MADCP meeting was held at Penn State Berks.
The project is an informal association of high school through university-level faculty in the Mid-Atlantic region who are interested in a discovery-based or inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning in the chemistry classroom and laboratory.
Butzler also recently has served as an invited speaker at the National Science Foundation's GK-12 Building Bridges: Capstone Conference in Lubbock, Texas.
Butzler was among speakers invited to present a symposium titled "Flipping the Classroom in the STEM Disciplines." STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.
The GK-12 Building Bridges program is funded by the NSF and pairs graduate students in science, engineering and math with K-12 science and math teachers to develop integrated math-science or math-engineering curriculum modules for use in K-12 schools.
Butzler, who writes a regular blog titled "Kelly's 24-Hour Classroom" for Penn College faculty, is pursuing a doctoral degree in education, specializing in e-learning.
Butzler has taught at Penn College for 14 years. She holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Gettysburg College, as well as a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in organic chemistry from North Carolina State University.
