Irene Rose Wellicka, 78, of Jessup and formerly of Forest City, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at the Dunmore Healthcare Center. She was the widow of Bernard D. Wellicka Sr., who died in November 1993. The couple had been married for 38 years.
Born on the family farm in Uniondale, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Monica Mikulewicz Kowalewski. She attended Burdick School one room school house in Uniondale and graduated from Forest City Regional High School.
She had been employed for 49 years in the apparel industry as a seamstress. She and her husband also owned the Beacon Restaurant, Uniondale, at one time.

Irene, in the past, was an active member of Sacred Heart Church, Forest City, and was involved in church activities as perogies preparation, parish picnics, quilting, dinners, Confraternity of Christian Mothers and served as Treasurer of the Altar and Rosary Society. In more recent years she was a member of Holy Cross Parish, Olyphant, and served as a Eucharistic Minister in both Forest City and Olyphant. She was a member of the Forest City Palettes-Art Club.
She was active in volleyball and bowling in younger years. Her interests included quilting, painting. Irene received her greatest enjoyment from her five precious grandchildren and involvement in their school, sports and theatre activities.
She is survived by two children and their spouses, Bernard D. Jr. and Jacalyn Wellicka, of Spring Brook Township and Rena' L. Wellicka and David B. Houseknecht, of Muncy; a sister, Kathryn Miller, of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; two brothers, John Kowalewski Sr., of Forest City and Edward Kowalewski Sr., of Clifford Township; and five grandchildren, Gretchen L. and Gabrielle F. Wellicka, Christopher D., Jarrod D. and Marissa L. Wellicka Houseknecht, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Leo, Stanley, Joseph and four sisters, Marion Williams, Helen Stefanick and Josephine and Martha Kowalewski.
The funeral will be today at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Cross Parish, St. Patrick's Church, 200 Delaware St., Olyphant, to be celebrated by Monsignor Michael J. Delaney. Interment in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Forest City. Those attending the mass are to proceed directly to church.
