Emil J. Fischer, 83, of Williamsport, in the early morning hours of Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, passed away surrounded by his family at the Gatehouse of Divine Providence Hospital after a brave 12 year battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 26, 1929, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Emil E. and Thelma (Scarborough) Fischer. Emil was a 1948 graduate of St. Mary's High School. A few years later he married the love of his life, Ruth E.(Wenner) Fischer, who just celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in July.
Emil served in the U.S. Army, and is a Korean War Veteran. He was a member of the Gesang Verein Harmonia Club and St. Boniface Catholic Church. He was employed as a pressman at the Grit Publishing Co for over 40 years. He enjoyed stamp collecting, woodworking, gardening and playing King Gin with his family.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Ruth, are their five children, Barbara (Michael) Engel, of Montoursville, Gary Fischer and Michael (Michele) Fischer, of Williamsport, Emil T. (Nancy) Fischer, of South Williamsport, and David Fischer of Millville; seven grandchildren, Brian, Bradley, Holly and Heidi Engel, Kristen Manikowski, Ty and Nicholas Fischer; and six great-grandchildren, Addison, Cameron, Brynlee, Nolan, Brady and Mylah. Lastly, he has a surviving sister, Sylvia (Frank) Casale and was predeceased by his parents, and brother, Philip Fischer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the Gatehouse Hospice Center, c/o Susquehanna Health Foundation, 1001 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport, PA.
The funeral services will be held at St. Boniface Church, 326 Washington Blvd., on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends may call from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the church. Crouse Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
