WELLSBORO - Erich J. West, currently at Tioga County Prison on other charges, was charged with burglary, criminal trespass and theft, by borough police for a burglary at The Painted Cupboard July 27.
According to documents filed at District Judge Rob Repard's office, West broke into the store on Main Street through a glass front door and took a cash register containing $28 in change.
Police said West admitted he had committed that theft and others in a confession to state police and told them where to find the stolen cash registers.
He allegedly said he broke the glass door with a rock, and after he took the cash register he walked out to Charleston Road where he stole a car, drove it out to an access road to Hills Creek Lake, opened the cash register and took the cash, then threw the register over into some high weeds and drove off.
The total restitution the owner claims is $1,355 to replace the door, reinstall trim and install two new lock sets.
He was issued a summons to appear Oct. 22.
