Beatrice 'Bea' Mary White McCord, 91, formerly of Troy, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, while in the care of RiverWoods Senior Living Community in Lewisburg. Bea was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She considered her family to be her greatest legacy, including her five children, 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Bea was born on March 5, 1922 in Lewes, Del., daughter of the late William Walter White and the late Effie Bell White. The oldest of three children, she was sister to the late Hugh White and the late Robert White, both of Snedekerville. Bea was the devoted wife of the late William J. McCord whom she married on June 15, 1944. She and Bill celebrated 29 years of marriage together until his untimely death in May of 1973. Bea was devoted to her five children: William "Bill" McCord of Hudson, Ohio; the late James "Jim" McCord of Pequea; Katharine "Kathy" Gathman of Lewisburg; Ruth Blanas of Bethlehem; and the Reverend Walter "Walt" McCord of Chicago, Ill.
A passionate student and teacher, Bea had a lifelong love of learning. A 1939 graduate of Troy High School, she earned her BS in Secondary Education from Penn State University in 1943. She earned her Elementary Teaching Certificate from Mansfield University in 1974. Bea taught in both the Troy and Canton School Districts, teaching high school English and Physical Education, and later, Elementary Physical Education and First Grade. She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority and a lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association.
Bea remained active in her community all her life, volunteering for countless hours of service in numerous local clubs and organizations. A lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Troy, she served as Deacon and Elder, and was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Women's Association. She was a member of the Troy American Legion Auxiliary for 76 years, a regular volunteer at the Troy Community Hospital gift shop, a member of Eastern Star, the Troy Vet's Club, the Troy Thursday Study Club, and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR), among many others.
Bea was an avid reader - and writer of countless cards and letters to her long list of friends and family. She had a love of travel and greatly enjoyed her tours of many states and nations, including Alaska, Hawaii, Spain, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand.
In 2010, Bea moved to Lewisburg, to live with her daughter, Katharine. She moved to RiverWoods in March 2013, where she was residing at the time of her passing. A proud and patriotic American, Bea loved her country and she was greatly loved and admired by her extensive family and her many friends. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by: son William McCord and wife, Kathleen Swinsick McCord; granddaughter Melissa McCord and husband, Eric Andersen; grandson Matthew McCord and wife, Heather, and great-grandson Colton; daughter-in-law Jacalyn McCord Sweitzer and husband, Randy; granddaughter Jennifer Hunt and husband, Gary; and great-grandchildren Lydia, Alise and Weston; granddaughter Jessica Egan and husband, Bob, and great-grandchildren James and Abigail; and granddaughter Jamie Bauman and husband Joe, and great-grandchildren Edwin and Maxwell (both deceased); daughter Katharine Gathman and husband Richard; grandson the Rev. Andrew Gathman and wife, Eileen, and great-grandchildren Juan Carlos and Angelina; granddaughter Laura Taylor and husband, Aaron, and great-grandchildren Jacob, Nathan and Joel; granddaughter Carolyn McSween and husband, David, and great-grandchildren Delaney, Audrey and Mitchell; and grandson Thomas Gathman; daughter Ruth Blanas and husband, Jim; grandson Alexander Blanas and wife, Jane Blanas; and granddaughter Katharine Blanas; son Walter McCord and wife, Brenda Hanes McCord; grandson Mark McCord and great-granddaughter Riley; grandson Jonathan McCord and wife, Lesley, great-grandchildren Levi and Rush; and grandson Seth McCord and wife, Haley.
Other surviving family members include Bea's sister-in-law Martha White, and nieces Deborah White Hershey and Carol White; sister-in-law Bertha Wolfe, nephew Donald White, and niece Susan White Jones; niece Carol McCord Levengood; and nephews Thomas and Jeffrey McCord.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 121 West Main Street, Troy, PA 16947, on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. A light luncheon will immediately follow the service in the church parlor. All are welcome. Private interment will take place at the gravesite attended by family only. The Rev. William Bardo and Bea's son, the Rev. Walter McCord, will officiate. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Troy First Presbyterian Church.
