Stephen H. (Hodges) Lay went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013.
He was born on Aug. 10, 1935, to Ernest F. and Dorothy E. Hodges Lay.
He graduated from Williamsport High School in 1953 and served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. He was stationed in Fort Dix, N.J. and worked in their dental lab.
He married Mildred L. Ertel on Aug. 20, 1960 and they celebrated their 53th wedding anniversary on August 20th.
Steve was employed at the Williamsport Candy Company as a salesman for 42 years. He also owned the Stephen H. Lay dental lab and worked for six dentists in the local area.
Steve belonged to the Ivy Lodge 397 and the consistory. He was a member of Northway Presbyterian Church. Prior to that, he was an active member of New Covenant United Church of Christ and served as a Deacon and Elder for 12 years.
Steve loved flying and held a private pilot's license. He loved the outdoors and his activities included camping, hunting, salmon fishing and playing horseshoes. He also loved to cook and grill for family and friends.
He was an avid Penn State fan and was a season ticket holder there for 40 years. He loved the seashore and vacationing at Myrtle Beach. Steve enjoyed reciting favorite scriptures and singing hymns with his family. He sponsored a child in Africa through Church World Service.
He is survived by his wife, Millie, and three children: Susan Lay Mayer of Loyalsock, Laurie A. Kustanbauter (Stephen) of Hughesville and Stephen M. Lay (Mary) of Bloomsburg; also five grandchildren, James Ryan (J.R.) Kustanbauter, Kaitlyn Suzanne Kustanbauter, Jason Daniel Kustanbauter, Jacob Andrew Lay and Madeline Frances Lay.
Stephen's Life Celebration service will be held Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Northway Presbyterian Church, 1520 Northway Road, Williamsport with Rev. Ken Woods-Henderson officiating. Friends and family may visit at the church from 10 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be at Oak Lawn Christian Hill cemetery.
Flowers will be provided by the family. Memorials in Steve's name may be made to the Northway Presbyterian Church.
