After a high of about 65 today in the Williamsport area, the temperature is expected to dip below normal to make for a cold weekend, according to the National Weather Service in State College. And that could mean snowflakes in the Northern Tier.
"As far as warmth goes, (today) will be your day," meteorologist Kevin Fitzgerald said Sunday.
Temperatures will start out warm today but then will dip below the normal temperatures for this time of year.
"It looks like another cold front will come around mid-week, around Wednesday," Fitzgerald said. "Behind that, temperatures will be below normal."
Fitzgerald explained that for Williamsport, average temperatures for this time of year are in the mid- to upper- 50s, but a cold front in the second half of the week will drop temperatures down to a high of 50 or below.
Lows, "well down" into the 30s, also could allow the area to see its first freeze - when temperatures drop below 32 degrees fahrenheit.
But the area will not be alone in the colder-than-normal temperatures as a shift in jet streams, which will dip further south, will make for chillier temperatures throughout the entire Northeast.
And while a rain shower or two could hit the area during the week, for those toward the northern part of the state, snow could be mixed in, as nighttime lows drop into the 20s.
With the colder temperatures in higher terrains mixing with moisture, Fitzgerald said, "the first flakes of the season are certainly possible." He added that any snow that comes will be in the form of a mixture of snow and rain.
In the Williamsport area after morning frost today, the high should peak at 65 and the overnight low 43. Tuesday will see a chance of showers with a high of 58 and low of 36, Wednesday has a chance of showers with a high of 52 and low of 32, Thursday should be mostly sunny with a high of 48 and low of 31, Friday will be mostly sunny with a high of 48 and low of 29, Saturday will be mostly sunny with a high of 51 and low of 35 and Sunday will be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and high of 52.
In the Northern Tier, the high today will be about 63 with a chance of showers and low of 40 overnight. Tuesday there will be a chance of showers with a high of 49 and low of 32, and a chance of snow showers. Wednesday also has a chance of rain with a high of 45 and low of 28, Thursday should be partly sunny with a high of 41 and low of 26, Friday offers a chance of rain or snow showers with a high of 41 and low of 26, Saturday should be partly sunny with a high of 44 and low of 32 and there is another chance of showers on Sunday with a high near 44.
