LOCK HAVEN - Holiday fun downtown is scheduled for the weekend of Dec. 6 and 7.
City Council heard a bit of a preview from Main Street Manager Natasha C. Gorham at council's meeting Monday evening.
The annual tree-lighting ceremony in Triangle Park will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, she said. A large holiday tree in the park is usually dedicated to someone special, and this year, the big tree will be decorated in honor of local emergency responders, Gorham said.
In keeping with this theme, she is looking for the fire department and an ambulance service to display fire trucks and response vehicles that evening and to welcome children on board.
Council voted to close the block of Main Street from the park to First Street to accommodate these emergency vehicles.
Haven Holidays, a day full of fun downtown, will follow on Saturday, Dec. 7 with activities in the park and the annual parade.
Citizens Hose Co. was given permission to close Leather Alley from Nov. 29 to Dec. 26 for Christmas tree sales, an annual fundraiser that takes place in the alley off Bellefonte Avenue at the hose house.
Council also approved the use of Frederick Street as a detour for the annual Hi Neighbor Holiday Parade which takes place on High Street in Flemington. The parade is slated for Saturday, Nov. 20, and the detour will be in effect from 2 to 4 p.m.
Nov. 1 has been proclaimed "Veterans, Record Your Discharge Day" in Pennsylvania, and council gave it a vote of support.
Veterans are encouraged to dig out their discharge papers and have them recorded at the courthouse on or close to that particular Friday, Mayor Richard P. Vilello Jr. explained.
"This is to make sure veterans get the benefits they deserve," he said.
All military personnel are told to have their discharges officially recorded in their home counties, according to information from Clinton County Veterans Affairs Director Bill Bechdel, but amidst the excitement of coming home, the papers are often put aside and forgotten. When a young veteran turns older and can use military benefits, though, he will find it is much easier and faster to apply for them if his discharge was suitably recorded.
