Michelle Mostowy volleyed in the game winning goal in overtime to give the Spartans a 3-2 win over rival Mount Carmel Wednesday night at Balls Mills in a District 4 Class A girls soccer game.
With the win, Hughesville advances to Saturday's district quarterfinals against Millville.
"I thought it was good," Hughesville coach Murray Hanford said. "We came in with confidence, though we didn't play as confidently in the first half. I think we cleaned up the second half a lot more, we were better organized toward the middle of the second and at the end of the second and controlled the match and in overtime controlled it."
Hughesville came out from the start very aggressive on defense and attacking on offense. It didn't take long for the Hughesville offense to strike as it scored at 5:36. Melanie Santo scored the game's first goal off a rebound. Amy Rabb scored from about 35 yards out at 29:55. Mostowy scored the game-winning goal in overtime off a corner after the ball bounced through the crowd of players and Mostowy fired the ball into the left upper corner.
Emily Hamel, Santo and Abby Sherman all played well on defense and tried to limit Mount Carmel standout Alison Varano.
Varano scored her 100th career goal at 27:27 on a nice shield and spin move to tie the game up. She then would score her 101st career goal at 48:43 as she had a header off a corner.
Paige Hornung, Chelsea Matos and Isabella Stellar all played good defense for the Red Tornadoes.
