"Cafeteria Catholics" who have been looking to Pope Francis I to usher in changes in any Roman Catholic positions like the Church's opposition to birth control should take note of this recent news item: Pope Francis has excommunicated Father Greg Reynolds from the Melbourne Archdiocese in Australia for publicly espousing the ordination of women, supporting of gay marriage and celebrating the Eucharist after having been forbidden to do so: that is, "desecration of the Eucharist."
Many who have applauded Pope Francis' call for a greater role for women in the Church and a more compassionate attitude toward gays are being fanciful in thinking that these Papal statements signal any impending changes in the Church's position on these issues. After all, the question: "Is the Pope Catholic" has always been a purely rhetorical one. Just how serious does the Vatican consider Father Reynolds' teaching and actions? Well, former Father Reynolds is the first Australian priest who was not a pedophile to be defrocked and thrown out of the Church.
