HOLLIDAYSBURG - Nicole Miller's second-half goal was the difference as District 6 champion Richland topped South Williamsport in Tuesday PIAA?Class A first-round match at Hollidaysburg Junior High School.
Miller possessed the ball on the left side of the pitch, cut back to the middle to avoid a Mountaineers defender before placing a right-footed shot to the upper-90.
Sophomore Courtney Syfert logged the shutout in net, a familiar occurrence for the Rams goalkeeper.
"I?think we've only had two goals against in our last seven matches with five shutouts,"?Richland coach Nathan Gironda said. "She's calm and collected. The team is confident with her in goal ... She made two saves that were quality saves where another goalkeeper may have given up a goal."
The Mountaineers finished at 15-6-2 while the Rams move to 12-8-1.
"This is our third time to make it this far," Gironda said. "We've pulled a District 4 team often and we've had a couple of times where we lost to a District 4-3 team that went on to win a state title. Teams in District 4 are always quality. We felt really good to get a win. This is seven wins in a row for us. We were 5-8-2 with a week left in the season and it just started to click at the right time."
Richland will face Shady Side Academy on Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
