For the second year, Williamsport will have collection sites for Socks for Seniors, a national non-profit group that encourages people to collect new socks that are distributed to the elderly in local nursing homes around the holidays. The local program is led by Karen Fisher, who started the effort last year to extend a kind hand to the older population and to help teach her then two-year-old granddaughter, Sabra Fisher, the importance of doing good for others.
"This is a small way to give back to others who are sometimes forgotten," Fisher said. "Last year Sabra, her mom, Bethany, my sister Judy and I personally delivered socks to residents in three area nursing homes. The residents were thrilled that someone, especially a young child, was thinking of them and cared about them. We collected 180 pairs of socks and delivered them in three area facilities, including The Meadow, where Sabra's great-grandmother resides. This year we hope to collect at least 400 pairs," she said.
People wishing to support the local Socks for Seniors effort may drop off new socks at the following collection sites: Alabaster Coffee Roaster and Tea Co., 410 Pine St.; Gustonian Gifts, 30 W. Third St.; Solley Health First Chiropractic, 580 E. Third St.; Elite Feet, 836 Broad St.; and Sweet Frog, 1930 Lycoming Creek Road.
