When knitters are asked why they knit the answers are many. Some knit because it relaxes them and relieves their stress. Others knit for the pleasure of the creating - the mixing of yarns and colors; of designing something as they go along.
And finally there are those knitters who knit with a purpose; to make something for a perfect stranger just because it warms their heart knowing that what they knit will help someone in need.
Those "knitters with a purpose" are the types that have been a part of the "Mittens from the Heart" program at Bradford Tioga Head Start for more than 10 years. It all began when Bradford Tioga Head Start reached out to the community asking for donations of knitted mittens for children up to the age of five.
Children who attend the Blossburg classroom of Bradford Tioga Head Start show off the mittens that were made just for them.
After the project had been under way for just a few years, knitters began to donate hats and scarves too.
