Josephine E. "Josie" Houseknecht, 89, of Williamsport, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, at The Williamsport Home.
Born Dec. 31, 1923, in Madison Township, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Maude Crist Gillaspy. Her husband of 56 years, LaRue M. Houseknecht, preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 2002.
Josie was employed at the former Schnadig Corp., Montoursville, during World War II. She was an active member of the Moreland Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school, served as a Deaconess and on the Social Committee and was a member of the American Baptist Women.
Josie was a very social person and member of P.E.E.R. at The Williamsport Home, welcoming new residents and helping them adjust to their new surroundings. She enjoyed gardening, both flower and vegetable, and was well known for raising local strawberries and blueberries. Josie also enjoyed baking, cooking and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are a son, Gary L. (Nancy) Houseknecht, of Muncy; two sisters, Thelma Houseknecht, of Muncy and Helen (Robert) Long, of Millville; three grandchildren, Tracy (Mike) Lunger, Leslie (Matt) Heiney and Jason Booth; six great-grandchildren, Emalee Lunger, Bethany Lunger, Cassandra Heiney, Joshua Heiney, Jackson Dale "J.D." Lunger, and Jonah Heiney; and a sister-in-law, Colombe Gillaspy, of Millville.
In addition to her parents and husband, Josie was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Booth and two brothers, James "Jimmy" Gillaspy and Glenn "Buddy" Gillaspy.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18, at Moreland Baptist Church, 118 Moreland Baptist Road, Muncy, with Rev. Robert Ingraham officiating. Burial will follow in Moreland Baptist Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.
The family will provide the flowers and suggest memorial contributions to The Williamsport Home, 1900 Ravine Road, Williamsport, PA 17701.
