MONTGOMERY - Montgomery residents may face a tax increase of about 1 mill and that money will go to the Montgomery Fire Department. The council approved the first reading of the proposed budget at Tuesday's borough meeting.
The proposed budget for 2014 will be $601,182 and the total expenses will be $561,905 with a surplus of $39,277.
"The profit will go to the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department," according to Borough Manager John Lynch. "The fire department needs money to function and donating the round sum of $40,000 is much cheaper than hiring another fire company to do the job."
"In terms of increase for property owners, the 1-mill increase will raise taxes $100 for a house valued at $100,000 per year," according to Lynch. "A property with a value of $80,000 will increase $80 per year."
In other matters, one citizen informed the council that all presents donated to kids for Christmas in Montgomery will stay in Montgomery. She was very upset when the donations last year did not go to community members.
A business owner inquired about ordinances relating to signs that are more visible to patrons passing by.
"We just want to boost visibility with signs that run perpendicular from our business to let people know we are here," explained the business owner. Right now most of the signs are up against the building and have low visibility unless the driver is looking for something particular.
The police committee, council and Brady Township officials met to discuss the possible solutions regarding the ongoing police coverage problem. One of the items proposed would be to have the full-time patrolmen work Monday through Thursday and have the part-time patrolmen cover the weekend shifts. Proposed policy changes was a topic for discussion during a closed executive session.
