Sophie M. Wheeland, 95, of Loyalsock Township, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at the Williamsport Home.
She was born Oct. 12, 1918, in Williamsport, the daughter of Lewis and Philomina Maika Sarama .
Sophie was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and her priorities in life were her faith, her family and her friends. Born the eldest of seven children and growing up on a farm, she was no stranger to responsibility and hard work which prepared her to be one of the best mothers ever to her family.
Sophie was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Max, who passed away on June 21, 2013 after 71 years of marriage; two brothers, Joseph and John Sarama; and two sisters, Rose Valance and Helen Sarama.
Surviving are children, Rosie W. (Andy) English of Montoursville, Ginny W. (Herb) Miller of Salam, S.C., Ernie (Donna) Wheeland of Pennsdale, Grace A. (Larry) Clark of Williamsport, Lois E. Wheeland of Williamsport, and Allen "Butch" (Leanne) Wheeland of Montoursville; sisters, Marian Sarama of Williamsport and Pauline Sarama of Montoursville; five grandchildren, Jonathan A. (Anne) English, Lauren P. (Sam) Sharp, Mallory M. Clark, Brett M. Wheeland, and Brittany E. Wheeland; and two great grandsons, Grayer M. and Rowan G. English.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2013 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 1220 Northway Road, Williamsport. Internment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to either: the Alzheimer's Association, Northeastern Region, 63 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, Pa 18701, or to the charity of one's choice.
