The Rev. William H. Martin, 89, of Jersey Shore, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at ManorCare North, Williamsport.
Born Nov. 27, 1924, in Girardville, Pa., he was the son to the late Allen and Alma (Pryce) Martin. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Jean I. Tiley, May 30, 2010. They were united in marriage Oct. 6, 1945.
Bill was graduate of the Elohin Bible Institute and a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He served the Lord, at the side of his wife of 65 years, Jean Irene Martin, as a missionary for the South American Indian Mission and New Tribes Mission in Brazil with the Xavante Tribe, and was instrumental in training Brazilian Missionaries. Bill also served by going on numerous New Tribes Missions-Youth Summits, accompanying high school and college age youth to various countries, including Venezuela, Papua New Guinea and Brazil.
After his years to the mission were fulfilled, he retired with Jean to Sanford, Fla., to the New Tribes Missionary Retirement Facility, and eventually retired to Jersey Shore to live out his final chapter in life.
Surviving are three sons, William H. Jr. (Ann) Martin, of Lock Haven, David J. Martin, of Buies Creek, N.C., and Donald J. (Kim) Martin, of Jersey Shore; a daughter, Susan (Dave) Straub, of Jersey Shore; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore, with Fred Timbrook officiating. Visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Welker Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Jersey Shore Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the Jersey Shore Honor Guard.
