New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is embroiled in a political scandal that adversely affected the lives of thousands of Jersey and New York residents who traverse the George Washington bridge every day. Unfortunately, political retaliation and backbiting is nothing new in the realm of government or public office and it appears thus far that Mr. Christie and his office have had a heavy hand in the current fiasco.
The idea that Mr. Christie had "no idea" that the people in his office were taking potentially illegal action against the Mayor of Fort Lee, N.J. for not endorsing him in the past gubernatorial race strains credulity at best and is an outright lie at its worst. I understand that no matter your political flavor, be it conservative, liberal, independent, or progressive, corruption has a way of dirtying everyone's hands. In the case of Mr. Christie this may just be the "chickens coming home to roost" in the history of a political career built on being as overbearing, flippant, and pernicious as possible in the governing of his constituents and the press.
There will continue to be abuses of power across all levels of government because we live in an imperfect world. We can only hope that people like Mr. Christie and his staff continue to face reality and learn that there just isn't any place for vituperative politics in the state of New Jersey or anywhere else in the country, especially from a man with national political aspirations.
