Gretchen Kennedy, I totally agree with you - and then some. Being fired for no good reason is unfair. Or when you're sick and call off because you're sick, not because you just want a day off because you feel like it. You're really sick!
Myself and a lot of people just don't understand the way owners think. It's because they don't. They don't think about you or me. They don't care or even think that, hey, they bring people here to our business. Customers follow us around. Friends and family follow us around.
We form working friendships with the regular customers. They get used to us. That's what keeps them coming back, because of our kindness, because we care. Not just because we want their money. Some people are lonely and need that little extra smile, or special coffee mug we might bring in for them. They aren't coming back, and trust me when I say this, because of the owners, because they think they make the best pizza in town. Maybe partly, but maybe because they like us as human beings.
They like us because we have a warm smile or a loving hug when they leave. We go to our jobs because that's how what we do. We've done it for years. We don't go to work because we want to be called bad names. Or told, we are worthless, stupid or a bum. Or we make a simple mistake. We all make mistakes! Even the people that own these places. But they don't see their mistake or even account for them.
How about getting fired for something that wasn't your fault. Being a mother with three young children and being fired, putting herself through school, making the best life for herself as a single parent.
With this all being said, we are all human. God created us equal. I'm not any better than you, and you're not any better than me. I just have a better following than you do. My and our friends are loyal to us. And all those regular customers of your will always rather have a warm smile and a kind word.
