RAUCHTOWN - A three-bay garage on the property of Jack Welshans Jr. on School Road went up in flames on Monday afternoon, sending up a large black column of smoke that was visible more than a mile away, according to Nippenose Valley Fire Chief Dean Miller said.
The building, about 75 feet from Welshans' house, was ablaze when volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene just before 3 p.m.
Firefighters were concerned about a large propane tank near the back of the garage, but fortunately the flames never reached it, Miller said.
The garage - which contained a pickup truck, welding equipment, an air compressor and numerous tools - was a total loss, Miller said. No damage estimate has been determined, "but it will be high," he said.
The bulk of the fire was knocked down in about 30 minutes, Miller said, adding that Welshans had fire insurance. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
In addition to Nippenose Valley, firefighters from Jersey Shore, Antes Fort, Woodward Township, Nisbet, Washington Township and Wayne Township (Clinton County) responded.
