The historic toboggan slide in Eagles Mere is slated to open this weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, according to borough official Kay Wilson.
The slide, which takes participants down the icy Lake Avenue slope and out over Eagles Mere Lake, first opened in 1904 and has become a staple of Eagles Mere winter activities ever since.
Despite a frigid January, only recently were conditions ripe for construction of the slide to begin.
Built out of 12-inch thick, 400-pound blocks of ice cut from Eagles Mere Lake, the slide was constructed this past weekend by volunteers and the Eagles Mere Volunteer Fire Co.
As of Tuesday of last week, only 11 inches had accumulated, Wilson said. At that time, she doubted whether the slide would be built over the weekend.
"The projected forecast doesn't look good," she said.
