Alert1 announced that during the months of November and December its team donated a portion of proceeds and provided hundreds of meals in collaboration with the local STEP Office of Aging Meals On Wheels program.
STEP's mission is to engage diverse individuals, families, and communities in the pursuit of social and economic success. Their mission is fulfilled through programs under five Pathways to Success: Early Learning, Housing Options, Workforce Development, Community Collaboration and Independent Living. The Meals On Wheels program falls under STEP's Independent Living Pathway.
The program utilizes a network of 600 volunteers to provide daily delivery of hot noon meals, Monday through Friday, to approximately 425 seniors in Lycoming and Clinton counties.

While nutritious meals are a key part of the program, the daily interaction and socialization between seniors and volunteers also are important aspects of Meals On Wheels.
On the national level, the Meals On Wheels Association of America is the oldest and largest national organization helping to de-escalate senior hunger. As one of more than 5,000 senior nutrition programs nationwide, Meals On Wheels donates 1 million meals to seniors each day.
According to a September 2013 report from the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger, one out of every six seniors is threatened by hunger. The report points out that in 2011 alone, 8.8 million seniors faced the threat of hunger.
"We are proud to help end senior hunger in America," said Jeremy Furman, Alert1 general manager. "By supporting STEP's Meals On Wheels program, we are starting with our own backyard."
In addition to providing for the safety and independence of retired people, Alert1 is committed to combating other issues seniors face.
"At Alert1, we strive to provide the best service not only to our members but also to the wider community," Furman said. "Meals On Wheels tackles a serious issue that affects many Americans and we are honored to do our part in assuring the welfare of the Greatest Generation."
