Emma Catherine (Messner) Groover 64, a resident of Williamsport, passed away Feb. 25, 2014, at Sycamore Manor Health Services, Montoursville, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Williamsport, Feb. 2, 1950, she was the daughter of Charles Henry and Mary (Beck) Messner, of East Point, Pa., where she grew up on the family farm.
Emma graduated from Liberty High School in 1968, and attended the Williamsport Area Community College. She was employed by the former Grant's and Nichol's Department Stores, Bro-Dart for 23 years and Hope Enterprises.
She was a member of St. John's-Newberry United Methodist Church, where she taught children's Sunday School class and was a member of the choir and Ad Council. She was very active with the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was also a member and former first vice president of the Newberry Lioness Club. She enjoyed going to the West End Community Center to volunteer with their clothes closet program. Sometimes you would see her on her jazzy traveling through Newberry on the way to help wherever they could use her. She enjoyed spending time at the family cabin, going to yard sales, crocheting, and spending time with her family and friends.
Surviving, besides her husband, Robert Ross Groover, of 42 years, are her mother, Mary (Beck) Messner; a son, Brian Clifford (Shani) Groover; and a daughter, Debra Ann Groover, both of Watsontown; three grandchildren, Travis Franklin Groover, Ashley Taylor Groover, and Alex Christopher Nicholas; two sisters, Darlene Rose (Frederick) Smith, of Cogan Station, Mary Esther (Larry) Zimmerman, of East Point; two brothers, Sheldon Charles ( Martha) Messner, of East Point, and Allan Lee ( Mary Martha) Messner, of Williamsport; several aunts and uncles; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Henry Messner on March 26, 2012.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 11:30 a.m., at St. John's-Newberry United Methodist Church, 2101 Newberry St., Williamsport. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Old East Point Cemetery, East Point, at the convenience of the family.
