J. Ellen Powell, 84, of Jersey Shore, passed away Friday, March 21, 2014, in Lewisburg.
Born Feb. 9, 1930, in Canton, she was the daughter to the late Clarence and Maud Phipps Spencer. She was preceded in death by a brother, Philip Spencer.
Ellen graduated from Canton High School in 1948, from Mansfield State College in 1952, and received a master's degree in 1976 from Mansfield. Over the years, she taught music in Montrose, Lock Haven, State College, and Jersey Shore schools. She also served as choir director/organist in many churches. After retiring from Jersey Shore, Ellen was the director at the Love Center in Jersey Shore.
Ellen was awarded the Spiritual Airus Award in 1990; was a volunteer at the Lock Haven Hospital, the Jersey Shore Hospital, the Red Cross Bloodmobile, a former member of the Lock Haven Music Club, the Tiadaghton Quilt Group, the J.S. Trinity Quilt Group, the Scrappy Ladies Quilt Group, Jersey Shore Education Assoc., National Education Assoc., and the PA Music Educator's Assoc.
Surviving are two daughters, Lee Ann (Donald) Eichenlaub, of Lock Haven and Sara S. (Charles III) Ambrose, of Jersey Shore; a son, W. Judson (Jennifer) Powell, of Fabius, N.Y.; grandchildren, Steven, Nathan, and Dana Eichenlaub, and Carly and Sofia Powell; siblings, Stephen (Hildegarde) Spencer, of State College, Wesley (Ann) Spencer, of Tunkhannock, Stanley (Carole) Spencer, of Slate Hill, N.Y., Margaret Mulford, of Ithaca, N.Y., and Evelyn Lightfoot, of Gorham, N.Y.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1407 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore, with Pastor Helen M. Learn and Pastor Jerry A. Cline officiating. Visitations will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, at Trinity United Methodist Church and preceding the funeral service from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, at the church.
Burial will be held in Spencer Cemetery, Canton.
