RENOVO - Clinton County CleanScapes will hold its annual cleanup of the West Branch Susquehanna Riverbank in Clinton County on Saturday. Volunteers must sign up by noon Thursday.
Residents should meet at the Flaming Foliage Visitor's Center and boat launch parking area in Renovo prior to 9:45 a.m. The cleanup begins at that time and ends at 12:30 p.m. with a free pizza lunch for volunteers.
All registered participants will be provided with a pair of gloves, trash bags and an orange safety vest.
In 2009, CleanScapes partnered with Keystone Central School District instructor
Laurie Hendricks, 20 Bucktail High School students and the Bald Eagle Boys Camp.
With assistance from Renovo Borough,
they collected 4 tons of trash and 53 tires. After the community beautification project was completed, intentional dumping was greatly reduced, but smaller items since have floated or blown in. This year’s cleanup will support the long-term maintenance of the West Branch Susquehanna Greenway.
Volunteers may choose to work on the restoration crew or as a photographer or reporter.
The restoration crew will remove man-made related debris from the riverbank and will bag items such as plastic bottles, discarded household items, metal and tires. No wading in the water will be done; however, the riverbank area may be muddy, rocky, sloped or steep and contain sharp, woody debris. Long pants and closed toes shoes are mandatory, and an extra jacket, hat, shoes and socks are recommended.
All participants will work in a team under the guidance of a CleanScapes safety captain.
Reporters and photographers will document the event using their own camera or a loaner. Clinton County CleanScapes will pay for any film developing but retains the right to a copy of each photo. Reporters will interview participants, describe the cleanup and compose a short story, which will be released to local media outlets.
Volunteers younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
