Helping people in need or facing an emergency is what the American Red Cross has been about since its founding.
This ongoing excellence in humanity was highlighted at the fifth annual Heroes Breakfast of the local chapter of the American Red Cross.
The ceremony honored 13 men and women who made a significant contribution to their community - from saving the life of a woman who collapsed in a grocery store to a three-time cancer survivor putting the needs of others before herself by serving as an EMT.
The heroes' activities included pet rescue, EMT services, police work, Good Samaritan work, philanthropy, medical and aquatics lifesaving and military assistance.
That's quite a range of exceptional work and dedication from selfless volunteers.
If this work was not being done by them, who would do it? That's an impossible question to answer with any confidence.
The richness of our community is defined by the volume and diversity of heroic service provided by those honored at the Red Cross Heroes Breakfast last week.
