April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Oral cancer is cancer which begins in the mouth.
Causes are tobacco use, drinking alcohol, chewing Betel quid and qutka, Human Papilloma Virus Infection, ultra violet light, poor nutrition, weakened immune system, graft-versus-host disease (after a stem cell transplant), genetic syndromes (fanconi anemia-DNA repair and dyskeratosis congenita-genetic syndrome causes aplastic anemia skin rashes, and abnormal fingernails and toenails), lichen planus(itchy rash).
About 36,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer each year and 6,850 people will die of this cancer. Treatments are surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, palliative treatment.
Preventions are limit smoking and drinking, limit exposure to UV light, wear properly fitted dentures, eat healthy diet, avoid HPV infection, treat pre cancerous growth, and chemoprevention.
