Byron M. Wertman, 90, of Williamsport, died April 15, 2014, at The Williamsport Home.
He was born May 24, 1923, in Turbotville, the son of the late George C. and Sara Elizabeth (Barr) Wertman.
Byron graduated from Turbotville High School in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. As a member of the 9th Infantry Division he saw action in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, France and Germany, as well as North Africa, and was awarded a Bronze Star. He worked for Stroehmann's and Your Building Center. He enjoyed model trains, baseball and big band music. He was a deacon for many years at Northway Presbyterian Church.
Preceding him were his parents; his brother, George Barr Wertman; his wife, Matilde Muffly Wertman; and his wife, Mary Ann Frederick Wertman.
Surviving are a son, B. Maine Wertman II, of Pompano Beach, Fla.; granddaughters, Jennifer (Dan) Stroup, Anita Wertman, Ronda (Ruben) Martinez and Amy (Leon) Martz; grandson, Michael (Pam) Pfleegor; stepson, Dr. Brian G. (Barbara) Frederick, of Orono, Maine; stepdaughter, Rachel F. (Dr. Scott) Kopec, of Princeton, Mass.; and grandchildren, David and Nathan Frederick and Abigail, Amy and Acadia Kopec.
There will be a funeral service 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 21 at Northway Presbyterian Church, 1520 Northway Road, Williamsport, with Rev. Ken Woods-Henderson officiating. Burial will be at the Turbotville Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Lycoming County Korean War Veterans.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Northway Presbyterian Church.
