nd of the federal highway trust fund it supposedly will run out of money by this fall if Congress doesn't act. Everyone who is conscious knows that the entire U.S. highway and bridge system is in woeful disrepair.
Here in Pennsylvania alone we have thousands of bridges listed as "deficient"; the roads are riddled with potholes; aging concrete and asphalt is crumbling away.
Every year, every state has its hand out for construction dollars and many billions are needed just to effect repairs, let alone start new projects.
But as usual, our do nothing Congress dithers.
Our state legislators bit the bullet and enacted a different, higher fuel tax structure that while a little painful, will help get our roads a trifle better.
But Congress? They are so afraid of changing the fuel tax, either in an election year or any year leading up to an election year, that the only thing that has a prayer of passage is another "stopgap" smoke and mirrors farce.
The trust fund itself is little more than another "old boy" slush account with priority funding for committee members' districts while other areas get the crumbs.
Meanwhile in Iraq and Afghanistan, citizens are enjoying brand new roads and bridges.
Hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars have been happily spent by a feckless Congress over the last decade on superhighways through the desert wastelands; high tech sewer systems, water lines, electric power stations, all built to the highest construction standards and all used little if at all.
When we leave Afghanistan at the end of 2014, the Taliban will be herding their camels on brand new four lane highways around Kabul costing hundreds of millions and courtesy of the beleaguered U.S. taxpayers while our own infrastructure continues to deteriorate.
The next time you head out on a bumpy patchwork interstate or cross a crumbling bridge, say a thank you to our representatives in Congress who have no problem giving our money away to countries that hate us while we wait. And wait.
