Louisa Mercy Atherton, 96, formerly of 1013 Thompson St., Jersey Shore, died Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the ManorCare Health Center in Jersey Shore.
Born Aug. 16, 1917, in Jersey Shore, she was the daughter of Benjamin R. Atherton and the former Myra Ellis. Louisa was a 1935 graduate of the Jersey Shore High School, the Williamsport Dickinson Junior College (now Lycoming College) in 1937 and also was a 1940 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University.
During World War II, Louisa honorably served her country in the U.S. Navy from Dec. 28, 1944 until June 5, 1946. During her life she was a medical technologist in several hospitals. She retired in 1983 from the Pennsylvania State University as an instructor in biology, and research assistant in genetics. She was a proud member of the Jersey Shore Historical Society, Lycoming County Historical Society, Ivanhoe Chapter No. 28 Order of Eastern Star, and the Fairplay Gospel Fellowship Church of Jersey Shore.
Burial in the Jersey Shore Cemetery with full military honors will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by the Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore.
