A surprise birthday party in Montoursville turned tragic early Sunday morning when a guest was shot in the head in an upstairs bedroom at a home in the 400 block of Weldon Street, state police said.
Cody Gorsline, 24, of Williamsport, was fighting for his life late Sunday night in the intensive care unit at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he remained on life support in critical condition, police said.
The shooting occurred at 424 Weldon St. at about 2 a.m., Trooper T.R. Havens said.
Montoursville police rushed to the scene, but the state police are the lead investigators of the shooting.
Gorsline was one of about a dozen people attending a birthday party for the male tenant of the home, who had turned 24, Havens said.
Gorsline and the tenant, whom Havens declined to identify, retreated to an upstairs bedroom, where the tenant wanted to show Gorsline a handgun, Havens said.
The gun went off as the tenant was handing Gorsline the weapon, Havens said investigators were told.
A bullet from the gun "struck Gorsline in the side of the head," Havens said.
WNEP identified the tenant as Derek Gair. Havens said both men are employed in the Marcellus Shale industry but work for different companies.
Havens confirmed that both men had consumed alcoholic beverages during the party. Police seized the gun after the shooting, he said.
Investigators executed a search warrant at the house on Sunday afternoon. Havens declined to detail Sunday night what investigators found during their search.
No charges have been filed, but the county's district attorney office is assisting state police with the investigation.
"Our office is working closely with the state police, but I cannot comment further at this time," District Attorney Eric R. Linhardt said Sunday night.
