A Deivi Grullon passed ball allowed the go-ahead run to score in a 3-run eighth inning as the Williamsport Crosscutters fell 5-3 Friday night at the Auburn Doubledays.
Crosscutters reliever Manny Martinez allowed three runs, two earned, in the eighth inning to take the loss after inheriting a 3-2 lead.
Consecutive Auburn walks and a groundout put runners on second and third with two out in the eighth before Austin Chubb's 2-run single to left scored Cody Gunter and Raudy Read.
Keive Rojas relieved Martinez after another single to face Osvaldo Abreu, who was at the plate when Grullon allowed the decisive passed ball that allowed Chubb to score. Bryan Mejia was thrown out at third on the play to end the inning.
The Crosscutters' Jiandido Tromp grounded into a double play with runners on first and second in the ninth inning before Aaron Brown struck out to end it.
The Cutters scored once in the second inning on a Grullon double and twice in the sixth on Cord Sandberg's two-run home run that scored Matt Shortall. It was Sandberg's second home run of the season and allowed him to extend his hitting streak to eight consecutive games. The leadoff hitter now has nine RBIs this season.
Shortall finished 3 for 3 with a double and a run from the No. 9 spot. David Whitehead, who threw 6 no-hit innings Sunday in his debut, allowed two runs on 6 hits in a no decision over 5 2/3 innings.
The Crosscutters left nine men on base and finished just 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.
Phillips Valedez pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Auburn to earn his first win of the season. Cory Bafidis earned his first save.
