There were no second chances coming into the District 12 10-11 Softball semifinals.
This was the last chance for rivals Jersey Shore/GSV and Clinton.
It was a hard-fought battle, but Clinton made just enough key plays in a 4-2 win, putting them into Friday's District 12 Championship against East Lycoming.
"My goal for these girls was to make it to Volunteer Stadium," Clinton head coach Mike Poorman said. "Usually, with 10-11s you don't know what you're getting all the time, all-star wise. I have a bunch of girls that have worked very hard. They keep their heads up, keep fighting, keep clawing and we're there."
Through the first two innings, Shore and Clinton were tied, 2-2. Clinton began the scoring in the top of the first with a RBI single from Zoe Eck. Her hit barely snuck through the middle of the infield, but it was good enough to bring home leadoff hitter Emily Cross. Eck was also responsible for Clinton's second run of the inning, making her way around the bases to steal home.
Myka Poorman had a great game from the mound, throwing a two-hitter and striking out six.
Shore scored single runs in the first and second innings on Clinton throwing errors.
"It felt very good to get those runs in," Jersey Shore/GSV head coach Phil Wagner said. "This is a good group of girls and they have good heads on their shoulders. They know the game pretty well."
Clinton broke the tie in the top third when Alexa Shultz, who led off the inning with a single, rounded her way to second, third and home off steals.
After both teams went scoreless in the fourth, Clinton extended its lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth.
"One of the things we stress at practice is running bases," Poorman said. "We have to get good pops off the bags, reading the catcher and knowing where the ball is at all times. Lexi is one of those girls that plays travel ball and she's been around awhile. I know she runs well and she's aware of where the ball is at all times. She makes things happen when she's on the bases."
