I am "excited" to write this letter in defense of the question that was posed in a letter July 15 pertaining to "God Bless America" and the paper being labeled a "cheerleader for Christianity".
I stand steadfast in my belief that "God Bless America" is something that we stand proud to recognize.
Why is it that a statement made by the author of the article be made in such a negative way?
After all, where do we all focus our eyes in bad times? Everyone from the President of the United States turns to prayer asking God for strength or blessings for actions taken by many. As an example, with 2,983 names engraved in the 911 Memorial dedication the Families and Leaders called upon God for strength and healing.
Why do all our service men and women who gave their life for our freedom come back with a United States Flag draped upon their coffins ? Could the answer be connected to 1918 when the "God Bless America " song written for and Army Camp was introduced?
Why does our American monetary system recognize ..."In God We Trust"?
The "God Bless America" is recognized at Major League Hockey (Previous Flyers games by Kate Smith), Major League Baseball games in the middle innings, and professional basketball games as an introductory song prior to the National Anthem" as well as many NASCAR races along with a prayer!
Since 1954 ..."I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, One Nation, Under GOD, Indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all!"
I am very proud and excited to see symbols of patriotism rallying the goodness of God in our country.
Our country needs to keep God and prayer at its heart. We have some many blessings to enjoy. These Blessings have not come without a price. Many of our service people are away from their families, have lost the physical ability to be whole and many have given their lives so that we may live and be a free nation!
Our local newspaper is in no way a "cheerleader for organized Christianity" as the author to the article stated. I for one, am proud that our local paper promotes patriotism in a manner tasteful to all !
May God Bless America!
