Every time a glimmer of blue sky could be seen through the dark rain clouds, it was quickly engulfed by the rain and the hopes of finishing a full, rain-free Day 1 of the 14-year old Middle Atlantic Regional tournament were dashed.
The first three games of tournament play were completed Wednesday at Logue Field, but the opening ceremonies slated for 6 and the fourth and final game between West End and Paulino, N.Y., at 8 couldn't even be started due to the weather.
West End and Paulino will play Saturday morning at 9 as all the games will be pushed up one hour to accomadate for a day full of baseball. Each team will have a game later in the day as West End plays Frederick County, Md., at 4 while Paulino, plays at 7 against Levittown. Saturday was the best day to reschedule the game due to time and rest for the players.
Players line up for opening ceremonies at Logue Field before Wednesday’s rain hit, wiping out the rest of the evening’s plans.
The day was not a complete washout as three earlier games were played before the rain hit. Mt. Olive, the Northern New Jersey champion and Levittown played the first game as Mt. Olive won 14-4. Levittown had only one hit while Mt. Olive had 11. Mt. Olive's Zack Fike had three legs of the cycle as he had a single, a double and a triple. He also had three runs and two RBI.
Altoona, the Pennsylvania runner-up and North Syracuse, the Western New York champion, played the second game with Altoona winning 5-2. North Syracuse took a 2-1 lead in the third, but Altoona scored three runs in the bottom half to regain the lead. Nate Everhart got the win as he threw a complete game four-hitter. Ryan Shope led all hitters with two hits and three RBIs.
In the third and final game of the rain-shortned day, Rotterdam, the Eastern New York champion and Nottingham, the Southern New Jersey champion, faced off with Rotterdam getting off to a quick start and getting the 13-6 win. Rotterdam scored eight first-inning runs and scored five more in the last three innings. Nottingham used five pitchers which could hurt it as the tournament goes on. Rotterdam had 18 hits and was led by Ryan Deguire (three hits, three RBIs), Brennan Macejka (triple, two RBIs) and Ryan Lanaro and Chris Forcilli, who added two hits apiece.
