MONTGOMERY - Two men were killed in a train and pickup truck collision around 12:15 p.m. Friday on Brick Church Road.
A train collided with a pickup truck, resulting in two deaths. The intersection of track and road where the crash occurred has no lights or crossing protection.
According to county Coroner Charles E. Kiessling, passenger Darren Ziemer, 49, of Nebraska, was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:30 p.m. from blunt force trauma. Driver Howard Martin Jr., 46, of California, was transported to Muncy Valley Hospital by ambulance and later flown to Geisinger Medical in Danville, where he died.
Both men were in the area working as carpenters doing construction work. Officials believe that the two men were returning from a lunch break to a construction site when the crash occurred.
While the investigation is ongoing and the cause of the crash has not been determined, Clinton Township Fire Co. Chief Todd Winder said the United Rental truck was struck by the train at the crossing. There are no lights and no crossing protection at the road's intersection with the train tracks, he said, which may have been a factor in the crash.
The truck was on its roof and on fire when the department arrived on the scene, Winder said. Prior to their arrival, two passerby pulled the two men out of the vehicle.
At the time of the crash, the train was on its way to the PPL Montour power plant and was traveling 50 mph, Winder said.
Assisting on the scene were Washington Township, Montgomery and Muncy area fire departments and Loyalsock Township, Warrior Run and Susquehanna Health paramedics.
