The Sullivan County Scholarship Association was formed in 1989 to raise funds to provide one time grants to graduates of the Sullivan County High School in Laporte.
It is a private 501(c)(3) organization. Each year, funds are raised from the giving of citizens and organizations within the county.
From the first set of grants of $200 in 1989, it has progressed to this year's awards to 15 graduates. Each student will receive $2,500, for a total of $37,500.
The grants are awarded to students through a competitive application reviewed and scored independently by former educators and can be earned by a student moving on to education in business school, technical school, community college or a traditional four year college.
The association's belief is that if each county in the United States adapted our model that the financing of secondary education on a national basis could be completely changed in a most positive fashion.
The recipients were awarded scholarships at the June graduation.
