What is your reaction to plans, nearing fruition, for a Route 15 Shamokin Dam Bypass?

  1. This is long overdue. Skirting the Shamokin Dam strip will make north-south driving to and from our area safer and faster and will be an economic asset.
  2. This is a waste of money. We can't afford the exorbitant costs of this project and it doesn't carry the benefits to match the expenses.

I don’t think shopping as an overall will be affected. I think it will decline at first, but in the end won’t make much of a difference. There are two types of people on that road. The first type are the people that are there to shop and eat, the second type are the people just trying to get through that mess to continue their trip. The second type of people will be free to avoid all that extra traffic.

Artfold, Fairly good point about the Golden Strip...and about Lyco Creek Rd., for that matter. I, for one, am very glad they built the beltway so I can go on the Golden Strip as rarely as I possibly can.

People completely lose any ability to drive when they get on the strip. It's like there's a break in the space-time continuum at either end of the strip that makes us forget we've ever operated a vehicle before.

I agree, garder. I do wonder about the local businesses. The "going shopping" thing obviously is not written by someone from down there. I go through there all the time and will LOVE the fact that I don't have to go through all the stop lights and traffic. Yet, it often provides a nice stop off point at Sheetz or McDonalds or wherever coming home just for drink and the bathroom. I guarantee once that road is built I won't be in any of those places again. I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one.

I don't know that this is a reason not to do it--it will make ME happy--but the concern is valid.

To garder54: I remember when they built the beltway back in the 70's the same concern was made about the businesses on the Golden Strip and they all seem to be doing fine. Granted, it did have a more negative effect on the businesses on Lycoming Creek Road, but they have adapted. The demographics have changed over the years and this new project is decades overdue.

About the local businesses, people will still go there to shop. It will just be easier to go in and out. I doubt that people who are just trying to get from point A to point B are interested in stopping to shop at random stores.

I have relatives in Maryland, and the most direct way to get to where they live is down Route 15, and I always dread going through that area with all the lights and congestion.

I wonder how much money it will costs the local businesses now that most of the traffic will be going around them.
