Can today's high school graduates expect the same quality of life that Americans for generations have enjoyed?

  1. Yes.
  2. No.
  3. It may be possible, but only if our government can solve the long-term threat to Social Security, Medicare and other programs and get the nation's long-term debt and national security back under control.

Todays group of graduates are unmotivated slackers that expect stuff to be just handed to them. I have no doubt most of them will flounder in their home town, telling each other how great of a job they have at the local bar, while living in mommies basement

The generation currently in charge have not left anything but problems for the younger generation to deal with. fromtheport calls them slackers. I disagree. I think their parent's were so arrogant, they screwed this country up beyond repair. I feel sorry for today's grads. The baby boomers really dropped the ball for their kids. How ironic that the generation following "the greatest" generation will go down being known as history's burnouts.

@fromtheport - just where do you expect them to work, and how do you expect them to support themselves? Jobs are evaporating. Another 150 were just lost in Lock Haven.

Yes, you could work multiple part time, minimum wage jobs and try to make a go of it, but when rents are so high, fuel, food, on and on, a dollar only goes so far.

There are only so many gas industry jobs to go around, and some people just don't have the physical strength to work 14+ hours a day.

Much of this has nothing to do with being a slacker as it has to do with lack of opportunity.

What quality of life have we lived that's so great?

Taco - we, the baby boomers, are the grandparents. Saying we dropped the ball is a an overstatement. Many of us have successful children.I do.

While I do agree that today’s generation is lazy and feels that everything should be handed to them, and if they get a college degree they should automatically receive a job with their diploma. I do not feel that the past 3 generations have been “enjoying their quality of life”. We are to a point now that if you are not saving for your future you will not be able to retire, but you will continue to pay for others to be retired. The plan going into social security was a good one, but the government of course botched another great idea.
