Carolina holds off the Saints

CHARLOTTE – Down by three points with only two seconds to play, the New Orleans Saints tried to make something happen, but came up short as the Carolina Panthers defeated New Orleans, 23-20, on Thursday night at Bank of America Stadium

Despite a 17-point fourth quarter rally by New Orleans, the Panthers managed to hold on. The Panthers scored 17 in the second quarter to build up an early lead over the Saints.

Cam Newton had 192 passing yards and a touchdown pass for the Panthers. Jonathan Stewart led Carolina with 31 yards on 18 carries. Stewart had a 1-yard run in the second quarter.

Drew Brees had 285 passing yards and two touchdown passes. Both of the touchdown passes by Brees came in the fourth quarter on a 9- and 8-yard pass.

The Panthers’ Luke Kuechly was carted off.
