Mexico finishes in 3rd
A closer look at the Mexico’s 14-8 win over Greenville, North Carolina, Sunday at Lamade Stadium in the consolation game.
PLAY OF THE GAME: North Carolina’s Cash Daniels-Moye made the play of the Series, laying out full extension to the gap to pick a fly ball off the grass and end the third inning, earning a standing ovation from the 6,000-plus fans in attendance.
MEXICO PLAYER OF THE GAME: Francisco Elizondo delivered a big hit with an RBI triple in a five-run second inning. He was on base three times and scored a pair of runs.
NORTH CAROLINA PLAYER OF THE GAME: Beyond making the highlight of the game with his diving catch, Daniels-Moye also had a hit and scored a run in two trips to the plate.
BIG INNING: Mexico’s five-run second inning came on the aid of just one hit, a towering RBI triple to right-center from Isaac Miranda. But it topped that with an eight-run fourth inning which invoked the mercy rule.
HOME RUNS: North Carolina’s Ashton Byars put a scare into the statue of Howard J. Lamade with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. Carson Hardee helped push along the Southeast’s comeback attempt with a frozen rope two-run bomb to center field in the fourth.
WHAT THE ADULTS SAY: “We so wanted to play in that championship game, but it was draining emotionally, physically and mentally and I think it carried over to today,” said North Carolina manager Brian Fields.
WHAT THE KIDS SAY: “It was cool to hit a home run. I had promised my mom that I would eventually hit one,” North Carolina’s Ashton Byars said.
WHAT IT MEANS: Mexico finishes the the 2017 Little League World Series in third place. North Carolina finishes fourth.
