Penn State rallies for win in fourth

STATE COLLEGE – Teniya Page led Penn State with a 22-point performance and Amari Carter added 17 as Penn State held off Northwestern for a 67-59 win Wednesday at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Northwestern struggled in the first quarter, scoring just seven points as Penn State took an eight-point lead into the second quarter.

The Wildcats outscored Penn State, however, in the second and third quarters by a combined 38-22 to lead going into the fourth quarter, 45-37.

The Nittany Lions came out strong in the fourth quarter, scoring 30 points to ensure the win.

Northwestern was led by Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah’s 21 points. Lindsey Pulliam added 11 and Abi Scheid scored 10 for the Wildcats.

Kunaiyi-Akpanah also had a double-double, as she had a team-high 14 rebounds, eight of which were off the defensive glass.

Of Page’s 22 points, 10 came in the crucial fourth quarter rally to help Penn State take the lead.

Kunaiyi-Akpanah hit a jumper with 5:27 to play that gave Northwestern a 51-50 lead. Jaida Travascio-Green would go on to hit two free throws to give Penn State the lead again with 5:02 to play, and the Nittany Lions didn’t let Northwestern tie it or take the lead the remainder of the game.

The Nittany Lions chopped down Northwestern’s eight-point lead to start the fourth quarter early.

In just a minute’s span, Amari Carter and Teniya Page both scored to cut it down to four points and a huge 3-pointer by Carter made it a one-point game with 8:49 to play. Penn State then took a lead 30 seconds later on a jumper by Page.

The Nittany Lions’ win snaps a two-game skid as Penn State is at Nebraska next Thursday.
