Women’s basketball roundup: No. 2 Mississippi State cruises past Auburn for victory

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Teaira McCowan had 16 points and 18 rebounds, powering No. 2 Mississippi State to an 82-61 victory over Auburn on Thursday night.

Victoria Vivians and Roshunda Johnson also scored 16 points apiece for the Bulldogs (29-0, 15-0 Southeastern Conference). Morgan William had 13 points.

Auburn (13-14, 4-11) wasted a terrific performance by Janiah McKay, who scored 25 points on 11-for-21 shooting. Daisa Alexander had 14 points, and Unique Thompson finished with 12 points and 10 boards.

No. 5 Notre Dame 89, Virginia Tech 59

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame’s starting backcourt just overwhelmed Virginia Tech. All three of them.

Arike Ogunbowale scored 26 points, Marina Mabrey had 21 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, and the fifth-ranked Irish beat the Hokies 89-59 for their 11th straight victory.

No. 9 Florida State 67, Boston College 39

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Nicki Ekhomu scored nine of her 17 points in the third quarter, and No. 9 Florida State beat Boston College.

The Seminoles grabbed control by outscoring the Eagles 22-7 in the third quarter. The score was tied at 29 when Florida State pulled away with a 16-1 run, which included seven points by Ekhomu.

No. 11 Missouri 83, Vanderbilt 68

COLUMBIA, N.C. (AP) — Jordan Frericks finished one assist shy of a triple-double, settling for her 28th career double-double on her Senior Night, and No. 11 Missouri defeated Vanderbilt.

Frericks had 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 12 rebounds for the Tigers (23-5, 11-4 Southeastern Conference), who have won six straight. Amber Smith hit five 3-points and scored 19 points to lead Missouri.

No. 15 Tennessee 70, Florida 42

GAINSVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Freshman Rennia Davis returned to her home state and notched her seventh career double-double leading a balanced attack as No. 15 Tennessee defeated Florida.

Evina Westbrook and Jaime Nared had 13 points apiece for the Lady Vols.

No. 19 Georgia 49, Alabama 43 (OT)

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Caliya Robinson had 12 points and 12 rebounds, including the putback with 3.2 seconds left in regulation, and No. 19 Georgia pulled out a win in overtime over Alabama.

No. 21 N.C. State 77, Pittsburgh 66.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Chelsea Nelson scored a career-high 30 on 10-for-13 shooting and No. 21 North Carolina State defeated Pittsburgh, the Wolfpack’s 10 win in their last 11 games.
