Boys track and field preview

Sprints: Sam Newton, Loyalsock

It’s easy to get lost in the wake of Bloomsburg’s Jahvel Hemphill, who won four state 100-meter titles and set the state meet record in the event a year ago. But Newton was as consistent as any sprinter in District 4 last year. He finished third in both the 100 and 200 at the District 4 meet last year, missing the state qualifying standard in the 100 by just .08, and missing it in the 200 by just .10. The good news for Newton is Hemphill graduated, and unfortunately Southern Columbia’s Julian Fleming will miss the season with an injury. He’ll likely have to battle with Mifflinburg’s Eric Zimmerman for sprinter superiority, but there’s no reason to believe he’s not up to the task.

Hurdles: Austin Breon, Jersey Shore

The truth is, this spot could have gone to either Breon or Williamsport’s Caden Fisher. The two are likely to be battling in both the high and intermediate hurdles throughout the course of the season. Fisher won the 110s at districts and Breon took silver in the 300s behind Shamokin’s Caleb Jemmott, who graduated. But they were separated by just .15 seconds in the 110s, while Breon had a nearly two-second edge in the 300s. It’s hard to see one or the other dominating, which should make this season-long battle all the more fun to watch.

Mid-distance: Tyler Leeser, Milton

The Virginia Tech signee is one of the most dynamic runners in District 4. He’s the returning silver medalist in the state in the 800 and was fourth in the 1,600. But he was also a four-time gold medalist at the District 4 meet a year ago, winning the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200, choosing to do just the two individual events at the state meet. He’ll be counted on for mega points this year for the Black Panthers whenever he runs, and the reality is he probably won’t see a ton of competition until he gets to the postseason. But Leeser is used to pacing himself and always seems to come up with his best performances in the biggest spots.

Quinn Serfass, Loyalsock

He’s the top returning finisher in the 3,200 at the state meet, having finished sixth in the Class AA race. He’ll be pushed all season by Jersey Shore’s Isaac Davis, who is coming off a cross country state championship in the fall. But he’s been battling his entire career. First it was South Williamsport’s Griffin Molino, then Hunter Crawley, Tyler Leeser and Davis. He’ll likely need to beat Leeser to get a gold in either the 1,600 or 3,200 come the postseason, but it’s a task he’s up for. Serfass will run for Temple next year, but he’s got his eyes set on more PIAA hardware before that.

Jumps: Keith Jason, Williamsport

You can pretty much just pencil in a Williamsport athlete here every year. Even though the Millionaires have lost state placewinners Qayyim Ali and Terrence Massey-Porter in recent years, Keith Jason should be the next in the group to make an impact in Shippensburg. He triple jumped more than 44 feet last year and finished behind just teammate Stan Scott in the area’s best jumps in the event. With Treyson Potts on the back side of recovering from a torn ACL, Jason will likely enter the season as the Millionaires’ top jumper.

Throws: Josh Dinges, Montoursville

He was one of the most dominant throwers in the area last year, cruising to wins whenever he threw the javelin. Even though he had a disappointing performance at the state meet in Shippensburg, his talent can’t be questioned. He had a season’s-best throw of better than 197 feet, and he has the capability to be one of the state’s best in the event. Danville’s Jared Mowery returns after finishing third in the state a year ago and should be Dinges’ toughest competition at each invitational.

Pole Vault: Keefer Goodspeed, Warrior Run

After a strong year in the area in the event, Goodspeed is one of few local vaulters who returns after a strong season. He finished tied for third in the area last year with a best jump of 12 feet, and he matched that height at the District 4 meet to finish sixth. Only district runner-up Travis Keyser of Bloomsburg returns of the finishers ahead of him at districts, leaving an opening for Goodspeed to potentially climb the ranks. The Defenders have had a strong vaulting program in recent years under coach Jeremy Betz, and Goodspeed may be the next state qualifier from Warrior Run.
