Central Mountain boys defeat Jersey Shore

JERSEY?SHORE?- Coming into Monday’s game against Central Mountain, Jersey Shore needed two wins to seal a spot in the District 4 Class AAA?playoffs. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they still need those two wins.

Central Mountain beat Jersey Shore 68-58 on the road behind another solid outing from Cole Renninger, who was averaging 28 points per game. He fell short of that average Monday night, but only by three points, as he hit nine two-point field goals while adding two three-pointers and a free-throw for a total of 25 points.

The Wildcats ruled the game early, starting out with a 12-0 scoring run in the opening six minutes, which gave them momentum throughout the rest of the first half. They expanded their lead throughout the second quarter and went into half-time with a commanding 33-19 lead.

However, when the Bulldogs (9-9) came out for the second half of play they seemed to clear the cobwebs and went on a scoring run of their own. Sophomore Eric Huling had a hot hand in the second half, hitting three shots from behind the arc, helping to pull Shore within six points halfway through the third quarter.

“We have to come out and be prepared to play,” said Jersey Shore’s head coach Butch Barnhart. “In the first quarter we were complacent and even though we were able to battle back in the third, we cannot allow a team as good as Central Mountain to go up on us by that many points in the first quarter and expect to win,” he added.

But right on time Renninger showed up. Driving into the paint and hitting layup after layup, Renninger slowly dissipated the Jersey Shore energy. By the end of the third quarter Central Mountain sitting pretty once again, with an 11 point lead.

“We weren’t nervous when Jersey Shore started working their way back in the game, because that’s something we have gone through with some of the other teams we’ve played this year,” Central Mountain head coach Scott Baker said. “We realize there’s no need to panic and if we just play our game everything will be alright.”
